Ulay (1943–2020) was a German artist who lived and worked in Amsterdam from 1968 onwards and, for several decades, played an important role in the Dutch and international performance art scene. With a background in photography, he developed a radical practice in which photography, performance and Body Art came together. The body and the question of how identity is shaped, experienced and imposed are central to his oeuvre.
Amsterdam provided an important base for the development of his artistic practice. He became involved in the city’s experimental art scene, worked as a consultant for Polaroid and was closely connected to De Appel. In his early Polaroid works and self-portraits, he explored identity, gender and the boundaries of the body. Photography was not simply a medium for documenting, but an instrument through which he could transform his own identity and appearance.
From 1976 to 1988, Ulay worked intensively with Marina Abramović. In iconic works such as Relation and Nightsea Crossing, they explored the physical and psychological limits of the body, time, trust and human connection. Their collaboration remains one of the most influential chapters in the history of performance art.
At the same time, Ulay developed a substantial and distinctive body of work of his own. Through photography, performance and conceptual projects, he addressed the vulnerability of the individual and themes including gender, nationality, exclusion, racism and inequality. His work connects the personal body to wider social questions, moving continuously between photography, performance and the social realm.
