Gery De Smet (born 1961 in Merksem, lives and works in Ghent) works in his painting like an archivist or an archaeologist, constantly searching for what binds people or separates them. It is therefore not surprising that the paintings, which he often makes in series, lean on man's unstoppable need for folklore, heroism, nationalism and (self-)deception. De Smet works on themes such as deception, manipulation, propaganda and ideology and always does so with an ironic or sardonic sauce...
