I make paintings that deal with atmosphere and light in the image of the sun or moon rising from - or setting in the sea. I work from memory, drawing on moments where boundaries between inner and outer worlds are felt to dissolve, making the atmosphere and appearance of a landscape seem to merge with an inner state. I paint in oils, in thin and dry layers, using force to push the pigments into the tinted chalk gesso, wiping and scrubbing off paint to achieve a desired surface. I am careful not to overwork the paintings, as they should be able to breathe, so they radiate the colors of the layers outwards and have an openness to them. I aim to make paintings that come about in an unforced way, and that have a certain silence to them.
