Amsterdam-based artist Jackie Mulder has made a name for herself with her unique approach to photography and mixed media art. With a background in design, Jackie has spent the past few years honing her artistic talents, perfecting her craft and pushing the boundaries of conventional norms.
Jackie's artistic expression is deeply rooted in her upbringing, which was characterized by an oppressive and religious atmosphere. From an early age, she felt a strong desire to break free from the constraints of her environment. She found solace in making intricate drawings on paper, which eventually grew into enormous works as long as three meters.
At the age of seventeen, Jackie made the decision to leave home and become independent. This experience proved transformative, allowing her to fully embrace her regained freedom. Throughout her life, Jackie has remained dedicated to challenging the status quo and deviating from conventional norms, a theme reflected in her artistic expression.
In her photography, Jackie eschews conventional methods and standard formats. Instead, she experiments with new techniques that add depth and layers to her photographs. She deliberately leaves her work raw, emphasizing the beauty of the anomalous and transient. In doing so, she aims to challenge the viewer's gaze and push the boundaries of the medium of photography.
Jackie Mulder creates unique pieces that are entirely her own. Her creative process always begins with a self-created photograph or the combination of several photographs. She then prints her images on various substrates and applies various techniques, such as ink, paint, embroidery, charcoal and beeswax, to achieve the desired layered effect. The repetitive edits she performs are very labor intensive and she may choose to deviate from the original image or stay close to it. Jackie appreciates the chance element and prefers not to have a preconceived plan for the final product. She likes to be surprised by the creative process and the final result. Her mind is free to wander as she works, similar to her childhood where she would sit in her bedroom drawing endlessly. She avoids distractions such as music or other outside stimuli, preferring to be completely absorbed in her own creative space. This is how she creates her own world.
Her autonomous work was selected for Gup New Photography 2021 and included in Fresh Eyes Photo 2020. She was one of the finalists of the Gomma Photography Grant in both 2020 and 2021 as well as 2022. She was one of the three finalists of the 2021 Fotofestival Naarden Talent Prize. Her work has been published in several international art magazines. In 2022, her work was featured in the two final editions of BigART and at the KunstRAI in Amsterdam. She participated in several group exhibitions and she was the initiator of the "Gallery & Bookstore for Contemporary Photography" in Amsterdam where several solo exhibitions of her work were shown. Winter 2022/2023 she stepped across the border with a solo exhibition at Cultuurcentrum Hasselt in Belgium.
