About 22,48 m²
22.48 m² is an atypical and innovative contemporary art gallery that promotes emerging artists. Since its creation in 2010 by Rosario Caltabiano, the gallery has sought to make a significant contribution to the French and international contemporary art scene.
The origin of the name "22.48 m²" refers to the surface area of the exhibition space in its first location in the Belleville district. A very modest size for a gallery, this is precisely what made it a unique and stimulating place for artists. This space constraint forced artists to rethink their approach and create works specifically adapted to these restricted dimensions, which encouraged experimentation and creativity.
Today, the gallery has moved to Romainville, just outside Paris, to join the collective KOMUNUMA project, which brings together several galleries, the Réserves du FRAC Ile-de-France, the FIMINCO Foundation and other structures linked to contemporary art.
Although the larger surface area is no longer the original one, the name of the place has not changed, as the spirit of 22.48 m² remains unchanged, continuing to play an important role in promoting emerging artists and bringing new artistic voices to light. The programming is thus diversified, welcoming a variety of artistic mediums, from painting and sculpture to photography, video, digital art and multimedia installations.
22.48 m² has gained notoriety for its commitment to experimental contemporary art and its role as a catalyst for young artists. The venue has regularly hosted exhibitions, performances, artistic encounters and collaborative projects, helping to enrich the international artistic landscape. The gallery often established partnerships with other institutions and participates in contemporary art fairs in France and abroad.
Since more than 10 years, the gallery is mainly involved in critical, cultural and educational initiatives, fostering exchanges and links between contemporary art and the public. Through its innovative research, it strives to redefine the traditional concept of an art gallery, and as such represents an essential component of the latest generation of players on the art market.
In collaboration with curators, critics and artists, 22,48 m² proposes a multidisciplinary program: apart from its regular exhibition program, the gallery organizes performances, screenings, round-table, debates, presentations of selected artworks, and activities dedicated to children and families, led by artists themselves, or by specialised animators.
Therefore, Gallery 22,48 m² focuses mainly on activities linked to critical, cultural, and pedagogical fields, bringing today’s art and public together. Through its innovating lines of research, it also tries to reflect a new vision of an art gallery and, in this sense, acts like a key player within the latest generations of galleries in the art market.
22,48 m² also gives priority to specific and innovating work regarding publishing: 22,48 m²’s catalogues and publications are developed and designed both as spaces for autonomous thinking and as a tools that echo the exhibited works.
