Ronald Noorman † 1951

Lives in (. Works in ).

Noorman was a modest and idiosyncratic artist. After training at the Rietveld Academy where he learned to paint, he only devoted himself to drawing. The intimacy of drawing, in which the thought comes directly to the paper through the hand without the intervention of a brush, and which offers little or no room for improvement was Noormans metier pur sang. His drawings are characterized by simple forms and movement between abstraction and figuration. In some drawings, landscape features can be recognized, others are completely abstract. Most of the works are untitled, but once in a while there is an addition to that which stimulates a certain interpretation. With his material - charcoal, pencil, chalk, pastel, gouache - at the ready, Noorman is looking for a balance between powerful and cautious movements. He wrote about the relatively small size of his most work: 'As an artist I am not easily impressed by large-scale work. I prefer to stick to the human dimension. In small format, I have to concentrate on strength, monumentality, excitement, spatiality, speed. ' Noorman had a great interest in Outsider art, and was also a collector of that. He also worked for several years in a studio for people with intellectual disabilities. In 2008 he organized an exhibition at Galerie Hamer (for Outsider art) with his own work and work of two outsider artists he admired: André Prues and Alexis Lippstreu. In these two artists, Noorman recognized an equally obsessive way of working. For example, Prues worked on a leaf for so long until no centimeter was unprocessed. And Noorman shuffled on his knees on the floor of his studio working on drawings until there was no room left for him. In addition to draftsman, Noorman was a gifted graphic artist. In collaboration with Ergo Pers from Ghent he made several artist's books in which his graphic was included alongside poetry by Hans Favery (Surplace, 2006) and Wislawa Szymborska (Krijtdiertjes, 2012). We'll miss him. Noorman was a fantastic advocate for art, and he regularly arranged his large network at special exhibitions. For example, following the exhibition with work by Hercules Seghers in the Rijksmuseum. Rarely do you get so beautifully and precisely formulated why this exhibition was so special and repeated visits were necessary. That is why we will continue to look at and enjoy the drawings and books of Noorman in response to his early death. Author: Suzanna Héman, assistant curator, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam
