NOKUKHANYA LANGA
About what
Nokukhanya Langa (1991) makes paintings, for a large part. She is on her way to become the founder of Soft Political art. Her abstract paintings come rather often with somewhere a hidden smile (i.e. an abstracted smiley) or are provided with texts of people that surround her. Whether by a member of an academy jury or gallerist opinions are put upon Langa. She paints tube-like borders on canvasses as if she wants to isolate these areas from the rest. Sometimes she ‘repairs’ her paintings with tape as a kind of band aids. In Galerie van Gelder the main wall is surrounded with a black tube-line with which a factual text statement is shown leading to a Soft Political artwork. A sculpture of fabric and painted wood and a text “Slow Fade” raises questions on borders and being pushed, perhaps. But there is one thing that is for sure when she comments on the Other: “Wherever something stands, someone will stand beside it.”
