Reflections brings together the works of Zhuang Hong Yi and Pepe Valenti in a compelling dialogue about perception, transformation and the ever-changing relationship between artwork and viewer. Although their artistic languages differ profoundly, both artists invite us to reconsider what we see, not as something fixed, but as something that constantly evolves through light, movement and personal experience.
For Zhuang Hong Yi, reflection is rooted in nature and cultural identity. His celebrated sculptural paintings, composed of meticulously folded rice paper, shift in colour as the viewer moves before them. These works exist in a delicate balance between East and West, tradition and innovation, discipline and spontaneity. Inspired by the rhythms of nature and informed by both Chinese artistic heritage and European painterly traditions, Zhuang transforms the simple flower into a universal symbol of harmony, optimism and renewal. His works reveal themselves gradually, rewarding every change in perspective with a new visual experience.
Pepe Valenti approaches reflection from a different direction. His works investigate the language of abstraction through layered surfaces, colour, geometry and the physical properties of light. Reflection becomes both literal and metaphorical: Light interacts with the material, while the viewer is encouraged to reflect inwardly, discovering personal associations and emotions within the compositions. His paintings are not static objects but living environments that change with the surrounding atmosphere and the position of the observer.
Together, these artists demonstrate that reflection is never singular. It is an exchange between artwork, space, light and the individual experiencing it. Both artists create works that resist a single interpretation. Instead, they encourage slow looking, inviting viewers to become aware of the subtle shifts that occur as they move through the exhibition. The artwork transforms, but so too does the viewer’s perception.
The title Reflections therefore speaks on multiple levels. It refers to the physical phenomenon of light and changing perspectives, but equally to contemplation, memory and cultural dialogue. Zhuang Hong Yi reflects on the convergence of Eastern and Western traditions, while Pepe Valenti reflects on the emotional and spatial possibilities of abstraction. Their works remind us that art is never simply observed, it is experienced, interpreted and completed by the presence of the viewer.
In bringing these two distinctive voices together, SmithDavidson Gallery presents an exhibition that celebrates both contrast and harmony. Different in technique, material and visual language, Zhuang Hong Yi and Pepe Valenti ultimately share a common ambition: To create works that continue to unfold long after the first glance, inviting each visitor to discover their own reflection within the art.
