For more than thirty five years, Mario De Brabandere has developed a coherent and multifaceted body of work encompassing paintings, drawings, and sculptural objects. His visual language is characterised by distilled proportions, geometric structures, and a subtle balance between control and spontaneity. Drawing upon motifs from his immediate surroundings, flags, vehicles, architectural fragments, or banal and less aesthetic urban elements, he constructs compositions in which form, rhythm, and powerful planes of colour remain in carefully calibrated tension.
Materiality forms an essential aspect of his practice. The artist frequently works with reclaimed or previously used materials that retain traces of time and use. Wood, paper, and found objects do not merely function as supports, but actively determine the character of the work. Paint is built up through successive thin translucent layers, generating depth, texture, and a distinctive tactile quality.
The oeuvre of Mario De Brabandere is compelling in its clarity, autonomy, and consistent visual language. It requires neither emphatic theoretical explanation nor complex framing, but unfolds through an evident singularity, sustained by respect for material, form, and craftsmanship. The works invite attentive viewing, quiet, precise, and fully present within their own materiality, colour and form.
