Jan Wattjes returns to Livingstone Gallery with his most current theme yet: Make Painting Great Again.
His conceptual approach to painting keeps surprising the viewer, making figuration in painting highly contemporary, making painting great again.
Jan Wattjes: "In this series of paintings language becomes an image.
Letters, words and lines move freely on the surface of the painting — not to be read, but to be seen.
They create shapes, rhythms, breaths, traces of thoughts.
Language loses its assigned meaning and becomes matter: paint, shape, movement.
This creates a new painterly language, in which text and colour become one and meaning shifts from what is said to how it is visualized."
