Four years ago, Emile Gostelie photographed a French haystack and took the image to his hometown Amsterdam. Since then, inspired by science, Gostelie investigates the unseen potential of this one photo by deconstructing and assembling the photo into new shapes and meanings.
Now the photo is returning to France during salon Approche. Driven by the return to its place of birth, the original haystack image has mutated into shapes that reference the collective memory of French ‘monuments’. Despite the evolution of the image, the DNA of the original French haystack maintains and rediscovers its essence in the many mutations it undergoes.
“Je Maintiendrai”. Meaning: “I will maintain”. Historical context: Originally part of the motto of René of Chalon of the house of Orange, now the national motto of The Netherlands.
