SECRET DOOR brings together the work of Sara van Vliet and Jan van der Ploeg in a captivating encounter between color, form, and space.
Van Vliet’s paintings allow nature to seep into the interior: rooms transform into gardens, lace curtains mark the boundary between private and public. Her canvases balance between fragility and vitality, inviting wonder and reflection. She recently completed a 4,500 km solo cycling journey to the North Cape — a trip that directly inspired new works, now on view for the first time in this exhibition.
Van der Ploeg sets this in dialogue with his monumental, geometric wall painting: a site-specific intervention in the former salon of ’t Kasteeltje, once a meeting place for great minds such as Einstein and Bohr. His work reorders the space and opens up a moment of stillness.
SECRET DOOR thus functions as a passage: between two artistic practices, between past and present, nature and culture, inside and outside.
The exhibition will be officially opened on 19 September at 6:00 PM by Nicole Roepers, curator of contemporary art at Museum De Lakenhal.
