Exactly one year after his first solo exhibition “Onderhuids” at Gallery Sofie Van den Bussche, a group exhibition is being held in honor of Ado Hamelryck, who passed away in October 2024.
Twenty-six contemporary artists present a powerful tribute to artist and colorist Ado Hamelryck (1941–2024) in the group exhibition “Black is a Colour.” This exhibition explores the charged beauty and symbolic power of black—a color that held deep and layered meaning in Hamelryck’s body of work.
“Black is a Colour” invites visitors to see black not as the absence of color, but as a full-fledged, expressive hue rich in nuance and poetry. The title, taken from a phrase Hamelryck often used himself, sets the tone for a visual and conceptual dialogue between generations of artists who share or were inspired by his radical vision of color.
In this unique tribute, twenty-six artists come together around the work of Ado Hamelryck,, each offering their own approach to black as a color, concept, or experience. The exhibition showcases a wide range of disciplines—from painting to sculpture—and reflects the versatility of black as both a formal and symbolic element.
With this exhibition, we not only celebrate Ado Hamelryck’s artistic legacy but also his lasting influence on the Belgian and international art world. His pursuit of the essence of color, form, and matter continues to inspire new generations.
