“A worried man with a worried mind, no one in front of me and nothing behind” (from “Things Have Changed” by Bob Dylan).
I’ve been painting stories of the pride that precedes a fall, paintings to gaze up at as we step over the precipice, paintings of sweet flowers growing in hard times.
The work of Haquin consists of figurative paintings that often originate from everyday events, dreams, and memories.
The depicted scenes appear personal and intimate, and may seem mundane at first glance, but upon closer inspection they reveal how the boundaries between dream and reality can easy blur. Haquin’s paintings are characterized by an expressive touch, complex emotional layers, and a powerful color palette.
For his works, Haquin often uses models with whom he reenacts certain scenes from his imagination. The artist’s practice is marked by a deep curiosity and a boundless imagination.
In 2024, Sebastian Haquin received the Volkskrant Visual Arts Public Award at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.
