Identity in interaction with the outside world
Art Gallery O-68 focuses on artists who exploratively depict current themes around identity, ecology and the interaction between self and the outside world. During Art Rotterdam, the gallery will present the work of Lenneke van der Goot and Louise te Poele. Although their practice is very different, they both explore the scope within their own medium. For example, they stretch the concepts of “drawing” and “photography” in their drive for experimentation and change. Steps into spatiality and lithography are characteristic and will also be seen in their presentation, which will feature mixed media works on paper, panels, photographs and objects.
In response to the hectic pace of everyday life, Lenneke van der Goot aims to find a resting point in her work, where all stimuli, thoughts and developments are brought to a halt. In large and small drawings, site-specific installations and murals, she suggests spaces that are accessible but offer no grip. Sometimes in black and white, other times colorful and shimmering, these spaces are populated by polygon objects, precarious constructions, stacks or patterns. These are carriers representing ideas and processes, reflecting on themes such as chaos, structure and wandering. Layering and suggestions of light and depth are important means in this endeavor.
Louise te Poele is a visual artist with an international reputation for her photographic mixed media still lifes and spatial installations. She recently initiated and curated the exhibition ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’ at the Saatchi Gallery in London. She is fascinated by truly everything around us. She uses (seemingly) everyday objects in her work, which she subjects to a metamorphosis through colorful staging. In this way she manages to create a surreal world of wonder. Her work is a plea to look at the world around us with new eyes, to discover the extraordinary in the ordinary.
