Until Friday February the 21st Ulrike Rehm's work can be seen at Christie's Amsterdam in the solo exhibition Spiel. The exhibition is open to visitors during Christie's Amsterdam's opening hours.
Born in 1976, Ulrike Rehm mastered a wide range of techniques through various educational paths. During her initial training in a guild in Michelstadt, she learned traditional woodworking. In 2006, she obtained her bachelor’s degree from the Rietveld Academy, and in 2011, her master’s from the Sandberg Institute. Throughout these years, she focused on creating conceptual works that she combined with her craft-based background. Rehm views the choice of time-intensive craftsmanship as an act of self-determination and a counter-reaction to a society increasingly focused on efficiency. Nearly all her works are created as part of a “one-woman show.” Her work incorporates visual language from East Germany (DDR) traditionally associated with masculinity, yet she uses traditional 'women’s crafts' like crocheting or knitting to create the works. The exhibition Spiel explores the wonder of traditions and symbols. By making awards, decorations and a podium of honor, Rehm illustrates how games, traditions, and culture are intricately intertwined.
