A pollen grain blown away by the wind, a prickly bur seed clinging to a passerby, the release of an egg cell, or the secretion of hormones—the natural processes of humans, plants, and animals present a continuous game of release. Yet in this sacred and unbroken dance, there is always a new encounter: pollen finds another flower, the bur seed falls on new ground, the egg cell nests in the uterus, and hormones find their way to receptors. Between these moments hovers a temporary reality, where structures fade and seek a new balance.
In Release, Matea Bakula explores this dynamic of cyclical processes, exposing both natural and everyday structures. Her work investigates how seeds, cells, and organs find their way in the body and the environment, and how husks, shells, and other coverings function as carriers that hold on and, ultimately, let go to find new purpose.
Themes linked to the environment, society, and our existence in this world are expressed through the installation of hundreds of spheres created from old egg cartons that have been hand-peeled. This slow and meditative process reveals the ontological simplicity of the eggs, allowing the material itself a chance to speak and symbolically reconnecting us with our essence of transition.
