During NAP+, GoMulan Gallery will show a duo presentation with work by Jonat Deelstra and Sophie Steengracht. Both artists create work about the way people interact with nature.
Jonat Deelstra created a ceramic series titled Funeral Home the North Sea in combination with a video installation called Squatter of the North Sea. In this installation, Deelstra proposes an alternative burial ritual where urns and coffins are lowered to the bottom of the North Sea to protect marine life from fishing trawlers. In this short film, Deelstra engages in conversations with funeral directors to explore the feasibility of his plan. A longer version will be screened at the gallery on February 22, 2025.
Sophie Steengracht shows the changing relationship between people and their environment. Due to globalization and technological change, people are becoming more distant from natural resources. With her colorful, symbolic paintings, she wants to show the power and beauty of nature and demonstrate that it is worth dealing with it in a respectful and conscious way. In her biodynamic garden, she grows plants that she studies, draws and photographs. She also uses pigments and dried plants in her paintings and works on paper.
