Wouter Eelkman Rooda uses tape for sports injuries to create paintings. Stephan van den Burg creates works on paper in a process that often involves several steps. Both artists have the same mentality, namely an unconventional search for non-existent forms of expression.
Eelkman Rooda works from the limitations of kinesiology tape. He paints these and combines them into compositions. The unpredictable outcomes of this process intrigue him. Where much comparable abstract art often strives for perfection and excludes chance, he lets the tape do its thing to achieve a raw, porous and painterly effect. This is enhanced by objects used to create patterns after the strips have been painted. Control and chance alternate.
Van den Burg operates in the breadth of drawing and aims for a conceptual charge of the result. He works from existing images or form structures. His own photos, found fragments and material studies form the starting point for his drawings, which invite you to come closer and consider what a drawing can be. Attention to the process and a precise drawing hand guarantee a unique outcome.
