For his new series The Development of Everyday Life Deelstra painted scenes of everyday urban life. However, nothing is as it seems. Deelstra's paintings are ominous due to unusual color usage and alienating scenes. The architecture in the work Bridging the Gap appears unreliable and by concealing the faces of his figures, the works take on an eerie quality. The construction worker, a recurring theme in his work, symbolizes an anonymous collective of workers without whom a city could never have been built.
Jonat Deelstra resides and works in Amsterdam. In 2018, he obtained his bachelor's degree in Illustration from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. Since then, he has primarily worked as a painter but also enjoys experimenting with new materials. His work can be found in various private and museum collections. Last year, a book titled BorderLife was published about Deelstra's work, written by Edwin Becker, chief of exhibitions at the Van Gogh Museum.
