For the first time in 24 years, Suzan Drummen (1963) exclusively presents paintings in an exhibition. Drummen is best known for her installations with shiny components, as seen on the walkway in Depot Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
Suzan Drummen works in various disciplines and has created numerous artworks in public spaces. However, at the core of all her work are large paintings from the 1990s. The paintings created during that period are housed in museum and private collections both nationally and internationally, with a handful still in the possession of the artist. When gallery owner Mulan Go saw these paintings, she proposed creating an exhibition featuring only paintings. This led to the plan of combining paintings from the 1990s with recent work. Although there are years between them, the visual language of the old and new works seamlessly aligns. The fascination with illusions on the flat surface is unmistakable in the recent works as well. Distortions and optical effects tumble over each other. Spatial constructions in bright colors are combined with spheres in soft tones. It seems as if you can wander through these paintings just as you can in her installations. In her recent work, the effect of spatiality, of an infinite world, is even more prominently visible.
Drummen: "The goal is still to make the work as generous as possible for the viewer's eyes; in that regard, nothing has changed, and yet everything is different." The exhibition is on display until January 28, 2024.
