At Art Rotterdam 2023, TORCH introduces a promising young Dutch artist: Krijn Kroes, who creates mostly abstract oil paintings inspired by nature. Part of his new body of work references art history and old masters, such as Monet's water lilies. By adding and removing layers of paint, Krijn creates Rorschach-like pieces that exist somewhere between mysticism, melancholy, searching and belonging.
Krijn's artworks pair perfectly with the 'sand paintings' by internationally renowned artist Liset Castillo. Her new series “Border” is a visualisation of migration over sea. It consists of 12 sky gradients, their rotating horizons representing the hours of the day and marking the progress of your journey. At each moment, your hope of reaching your destination might vary, as will the light and weather conditions.
The new project of Casper Braat deals with other current issues, such as consumerism and globalisation. We show his Vending Machine, from which you can purchase snacks and beverages made from the finest Carrara marble.
Contrastingly, Anya Janssen creates figurative paintings concerning very personal themes, such as identity and our deepest emotions. We present the final 2 paintings in the Clouddwellers series, depicting puppy love between young people.
