With these new series of sculptures by our artist Carolein Smit (1960) we inaugurate the first floor of our brand new gallery space at the Chocolate Factory at Lauriergracht 142.
The first Bloodhound is on show and this piece is the first of a larger series of these specific dogs that Carolein is producing for her upcoming museum exhibition at Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris, this coming fall.
In her work the artist plays with that unexpected turning point when beauty migrates into exuberance, hate in love, alienation in elucidation, and unresolved emotions in over-active sentiment. Smit lends themes from ancient mythology and from bible stories, such as the notorious seven sins. Often her sculptures enclose elements like those we find in vanitas, such as skulls, skeletons, small bones of animals; all these elements symbolize our temporary life on earth, shown with her typcial sense of irony.
At the same time you can visit the exhibition Dialogues with Nature at ground floor level.
