Albada Jelgersma Gallery is pleased to announce Mathieu Cherkit’s third solo exhibition in the gallery, Perma-Peinture. The exhibition will open Saturday, May 8, from 2-6 pm in presence of the artist. No reservations necessary.
For the last two years, Mathieu Cherkit (Paris, 1982) has been living in an old school and town house, in Vallery, outside Paris. For anyone who is familiar with his work this is important information, as the artist exclusively paints his home surroundings.
In his third exhibition at the gallery, we will be showing a series of paintings from 2020 and 2021, ranging from very large to very small, alongside a wall painting. The title Perma-Peinture refers to the ecological design concept of permaculture. Cherkit views the rooms that he draws as parcels of land that he cultivates. A circular process, with each cycle bringing something new.
The intense, often unrealistic colors, the way he plays with light, the abstractions and dazzling use of perspective transcend his paintings above their everyday subject. The viewer can’t help but be drawn into Cherkits' singular, pictorial universe, where the seemingly ordinary is both intriguing and stirring.
Mathieu Cherkit lives and works in Vallery, France, 1.5 hours outside of Paris. Cherkit received both his graduate and postgraduate diploma in visual arts at the Nantes School of Art, Nantes, France. Recent solo exhibitions include Galerie Jean Brolly, Paris (2020, 2018, 2016, 2014, 2011); Galerie Julio Gonzalez, Arcueil (2019); Albada Jelgersma (2019, 2017); Tajan, Paris (2017); Centre d'Art Contemporain de Lacoux, France (2013); Musée des Avelines, Saint-Cloud, France (2012). Group exhibitions include L'œil du collectionneur, Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain, Strasbourg, France (2017); Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France (2012); Maison Particulière, Brussels, Belgium (2015). His work is included in the collections of Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar, Netherlands; Akzo Nobel, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Fondation Salomon, Alex, France; Fonds National d'Art Contemporain, Puteaux, France; Fondation Colas, Paris, France and Musée des Avelines, Saint Cloud, France.
