The back space of TORCH Gallery hosts Small Paintings, an exhibition of recent works by Mike Pratt curated by Jacko Brinkman and Frits Bergsma. These paintings are a mix between light, singlelayered pictures and heavily worked surfaces. In order to create balanced images, Pratt often applies and adds layers, like silkscreened prints over painted colours. These saturated and textured surfaces are so tactile, one is almost tempted to touch them. He adds another layer of meaning to the works by assigning them titles like Sink and Pillow, which invite the viewer to create their own associations.
Mike Pratt (1987, UK) lives and works in northern England. He completed a two-year postgraduate programme at De Ateliers in Amsterdam in 2014. In 2016 he won the prestigious Royal Award for Modern Painting (Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst). He has exhibited in the Netherlands and all over the United Kingdom, among other places.
