Matthijs Kimpe (BE, 1987) lives and works in Gent. He studied Graphic Design at KASK Ghent (Belgium) and Painting at Sint-Lucas Ghent (Belgium). His fascination for modern image carriers, such as screens and digital prints is the starting point for his artistic practice. His paintings ask the viewer what an image could be and at the same time, his work questions the history and tradition of painting, where painting is being put against modern day techniques. He uses synthetic and optical materials in combination with paint and other textures (pixels versus paint). Screens and printers are being manipulated and deconstructed to become a distinctive object and to show an unique image, in contrast to their earlier fuction of producing multiples. His choice of materials give an extra dimension to the artwork and provide a stimulating visual language where the position of the viewer determines the final look and outcome of the work. His research navigates between the traditional static image of painting and the fast imagary we experience today.
