The series Please Return to the Highlighted Route originates at unexpected moments, when photographer Lonneke van der Palen deviates from her route and the navigation goes crazy. While traveling the globe producing campaigns for fashion brands such as Hermès and Maison Margiela, Lonneke might see an image that appeals and she will stop what she is doing to capture it.
These can be everyday rituals, utensils or places that are overlooked by the majority of people. A set table in a dilapidated restaurant for example, a big toe, a remote control on a bedside table in a motel room or a plastic bag dancing on the street.
Lonneke has the gift to look at everything with the same interest. But instead of simply registering, she reduces the image to its essence. In this way she enlarges everyday impressions and places them in a new and alienating daylight. This leads to a shift from the everyday: from a small intervention to an extreme transformation on location.
The result of this working method are compositions in which form, colour and light relate to each other in a well-considered way. In these compositions the original context of the subjects is replaced by a newly designed existence. In this way Lonneke wants to evoke amazement in the viewer.
The entire series takes you on a journey. A journey that Lonneke has made herself. Every image is for her a memory. As a viewer you are taken along, but at the same time you form your own story.
Please Return to the Highlighted Route is an ongoing project that Lonneke has been working on for five years. Some of the photographs were previously shown in Stedelijk Museum Schiedam as part of the exhibition on the occasion of the Volkskrant Visual Arts Prize, for which Lonneke was nominated.
