At Museum Jan Cunen we like to collaborate with galleries. During our The Hague School X Haagse Nieuwe exhibition, Livingstone Gallery introduced paintings by Jan Wattjes, which related in a special way to the classics from The Hague School. A group of volunteers of the type who prefer the shiny plaster frames over the modern ones, turned their heads and concluded that Wattjes canvasses were 'too empty' for their taste. The mood changed, however, when they learned that Wattjes depicted a gallery space. They became alert. They understood the work and discovered doors, windows and corners. They didn't proceed to purchase a work, that would be pushing it a bit, but the experience was often shared afterwards.
