Painting, drawing, wood carving and sculpture: you name it, he does it. All of Jonat Deelstra’s work stems from the same source of inspiration, namely different cultures and religions. Miscommunication and clashes between cultures motivate him to embrace them. For his paintings, he borrows motifs and symbolism from the visual language of different religions and cultures. When sculpting, he works in a much more intuitive and associative way. For the series Uitvaartcentrum De Noordzee, he made more than 30 ceramic ‘coral statues’, urns on which coral can grow and with which he would like to make an underwater cemetery. Deelstra explains, “Perhaps in the future, when we die, we can have ourselves planted in the sea, so that coral can cling to our mortal remains.” The sacred aspect of such an image appeals to him. Yet, he also takes a humorous approach to death and the weirder his urns become, the more beautiful he finds them.
