5x Humor in the apocalypse
Some days I spend hours on Twitter and in various news apps. I read about Ukraine. About Chinese debt colonialism in Africa. The IPCC report and the Thwaites Glacier, affectionately known as the Doomsday Glacier. The Russian soldiers who fired at the Chernobyl reactor and dug trenches in the Red Forest now have radiation sickness, having been taught that the 1986 disaster is nothing but a hoax. Kim Jong Un doing more and more missile tests. Chemical weapons, inflation, Marine Le Pen, the 'Don't Say Gay' bill, energy poverty. You might even forget that we are still in the middle of a pandemic. On other days, the surrealism of the world we currently live in barely penetrates and I can't help but find the humour in this choose-your-own apocalypse :-)

Koos Buster
Who better to help us put things into perspective than our own Minister of Ceramic Affairs? The Dutch artist Koos Buster recreates everyday ceramic objects. From an ATM machine and an ashtray full of cigarettes to a mop or a water cooler. Buster: "I want to make the world a bit more fun. I started to clay and glaze the sadness away."

Maze de Boer
Just outside of the frame in this photo, you could have seen my desk, I worked for months alongside this remarkable work by Dutch artist Maze de Boer. Although all the ingredients for fun are present in this work (coloured lights! a bumper car! nostalgia!) the artist manages to capture a certain blockage, in a literal and figurative sense.

Sometimes the simplest symbols are the most powerful. The instruction for this work is equally simple: 'In an emergency, when we run out of insects to pollinate our crops, smash the glass and wind up the insect.' It says a lot about our lazy ideas about the malleability of life, which unfortunately is not an option when you speak of the climate crisis.

Roeland Tweelinckx
You know you're living through a crisis when your radiator has become a political symbol. The Belgian artist Roeland Tweelinckx humorously plays with his environment in the form of site-specific installations. His work is rooted in art historical traditions such as Surrealism, Dadaism and Conceptual art. Incidentally, this work reminds me of Duchamp's 'Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2' (1912).
