Cristina Lucas' work shows a great social commitment. Her installations, video works, performances, drawings and photos are often downright critical, but also serious, playful and humorous. At the fair, Cristina Lucas' work can be seen not only at our stand, but also at PROJECTIONS. In the 19th century, the pigment cobalt blue was produced as an alternative to the deep blue of the scarce and therefore valuable ultramarine. Cobalt blue quickly became a beloved color that artists could experiment with freely. However, cobalt is also an essential element for the body because, among other things, it is important for the functioning of the nervous system. And: in this day and age, the metal cobalt, like lithium, plays a leading role in the process of transition to sustainable energy. But the quantity required far exceeds its availability. In her video work Cobalt, Lucas personifies the metal and lets it tell about its own history, about the miserable conditions under which (child) workers have to mine the material, and about the question of which life forms are victims of this industry. Lucas thus creates a beautiful portrait of the role of cobalt in our current time. Lucas seduces her audience with beautiful, theatrical images; yet she is not afraid to hold up a less inviting mirror to that audience.
