Johnny Miller – Salt Works
In Miller's series "Salt Works," the unusual perspective on the colorful landscape creates a pattern of abstractions, the decoding of which is fascinating but also points to the problem of human intervention in nature. The panel paintings, which appear expressive and painterly, depict the process of salt extraction: seawater is channeled into artificially created evaporation basins, where salt growth is encouraged. The color of the water is produced by microorganisms that change their hue as the salt concentration increases. When the ponds dry out, the resulting layer of salt is harvested, washed, and transported away. Johnny Miller took photographs for his "Salt Works" in Walvis Bay (Namibia), Yucatán (Mexico), and the San Francisco Bay Area (USA). The breathtaking views and the focus on landscapes altered by humans, as well as on urban areas in their visual and social transition, are the central themes of Johnny Miller's overhead photographs, making them unique in this regard.
