This work is part of the series Tränenlandschaften. In them Gerlach composes a loose reference to well-known German landscapes in which he integrates ornaments and figures that set the image in motion.
From a height you look at a mountainous landscape with a castle. In the foreground on the left are three trees that bring a vertical movement to the image. This is continued by the geometric shape in the center and continues into the hand with the pointed fingers that touch the shadow of the trees. These elements tie the image together but also bring with them a certain alienation that counters the nostalgia and charges the image.
