Am Rhein (Rasend), 2023

Diederik Gerlach (1956) recently made a series of brush drawings in brown bistre tones in which he reinterprets well-known German landscapes such as the banks of the river Rhine or the Harz mountains. Compared to his precise paintings on panel they have a free brushwork that brings movement to the image. In Am Rhein Rasend, a human figure rises with outstretched arms, reaching towards the castle and the tower on the riverbank. The dynamism of the figure is continued in the broad brushstroke that rises above the hill like a band and then bends down again.
