GALERIE VAN GELDER EDITIONS 2024
In contrast to the series 'Sirian Transmission' from 2024, Frederique Jonker's paintings are fragmentarily constructed with smudges, wisps, spots and clouds that seem to fly through the air, where objects used to play the leading role. In both cases, this way of painting gives the work the suggestion of depth and speed. These are keys with an aesthetic spaciousness, especially when a kind of claire obscure is used, where the background is strikingly dark against the lighter paintings in the foreground. The atmosphere that her canvases radiate has something ominous and cosmically floating, as if something is about to go wrong in an alien way. When you look longer, the first energetic and cheerful impression fades away, but then again not because the fun of making radiates from all sides...
In the 'Sirian Transmission' edition (a reference to the planet Sirius), the background is lighter than the foreground. The spray can technique used ensures that an abstract cloud always appears to float in space.
During the exhibition 'Peers and Pairs' (extended till 20 March), this Galerie van Gelder Edition is for sale for € 150.00.
