None of these 13 pools is the same. Each balcony betrays something about its owner. One pool per flat is an extreme luxury, especially considering that this residential building is located in the neighbourhood right next to the infamous Paraisópolis favelela. However, a closer look at this work disrupts the promise of upper-class bliss. Abandoned spots and rough concrete structures indicate that the ‘luxury’ world here is unsettled. The work The Individuals suggests that decay and brutalism are not just features of overcrowded ghettos, but that they may be the fabric of society as a whole.
