Epi Centre (Beirut), 2023

On 4 August 2020, 2,750 tonnes of illegally stored ammonium nitrate exploded in the Beirut port area after a fire broke out in a nearby shed. The disaster killed 218 people and injured thousands. The devastation was enormous and many houses around the port were destroyed. "For years, these 45-metre-high concrete silos characterised Beirut's harbour mouth. They were seen as the beacons of perseverance after the bombings and wars they had endured for years. After the 2020 explosion, their significance changed dramatically. The structure became the iconic image of catastrophe left behind in the world's collective memory. Just before the silos collapsed in the summer of 2022 (due to an unquenchable fire), Wilschut created this monumental work. The title Epicentre refers to the ambiguity of this monument".
