Ash Hole, 2022

Since 2012, Lefere has been working with forensic scientist Martin Smith from Bournemouth University. The artist gets to work with residues of the professor's scientific research. Most recently, Lefere has been working on the excavation of a collapsed Neolithic burial mound near Cirencester, which has inspired him to map specific Neolithic sites in the UK. The series questions our relationship to our past and how archaeology can have a lasting impact on the development of our thinking today. Archaeological research exposes what was hidden from view and this fits in nicely with Lefere's research, which often focuses on the field of tension between the visible and the invisible. The title of the series 'Shadow is a hole' refers to the research of phenomenologist Roberto Casati. This researcher studies the phenomena of shadow and holes noting that both cannot be defined without encountering internal contradictions. Casati sees shadow as a cavity in the light through which both terms can be connected. Light (and therefore its counterpart shadow) plays a crucial role in our perception. Shadowing in particular is crucial in the representation of perspective. It is also a visual tool within photography. Many archaeological sites only reveal themselves through a disruption in the natural landscape. Archaeologists then have to excavate cavities to uncover the hidden. Within his series, Lefere seeks out these contrasts; the hollow in relation to the mountain; the visible in relation to the invisible and the natural in relation to the constructed.
