In the style of Soo d’Oude Songen, Soo Pypen de Jonge, Tahné Kleijn photographes herself and her family members, each dealing in their own way with the recent loss of their mother, grandmother and partner. Through this series, Kleijn creates a universal view on the theme of mourning.
Tahné Kleijn wrote about this picture: "When our mother died in 2021, I received dozens of bunches of flowers. It's very sweet that so many people think of you, and receiving it made me feel good for a moment. Yet two weeks later they symbolized one of the toughest moments in the coping process.
While the world around me slowly started spinning again, I was suddenly surrounded by nothing but dead flowers. I lived in an apartment complex and was forced to push the stems one by one through the underground container. While I wasn't ready to move on, these flowers only reminded me of the transience of existence.
'Rozen Verwelken' is one of the photos from the series 'uit 't Oog, In 't Hart'. It is the second and perhaps last sequel to my series 'Soo d'Oude Songen, Soo Pypen de Jonge' and is about the mourning for our mother. About that dark period when the core of our family disappeared. But also the period in which, grieving for my mother, I became a mother myself. With recognizable situations for everyone who has lost someone so dear. But of course also situations that our family makes so special."
'Uit 't Oog, In 't Hart' can be seen for the first time by the general public next week (21 to 24 September) during Unseen Photo Fair in Amsterdam.
