The unique visual language of this multidisciplinary artist makes his work distinctive. Bas creates a world that explores both personal and societal themes through drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, installation, jewellery, graphic design, photography, music, performance and costume. He takes an inner journey through his colourfully striking and naive figures, some of which pop up again from time to time in his work. By visualising themes such as joy and emotional self-awareness, Bas evokes a certain recognition from the viewer without being pedantic. There is no specific aim, just informality.
Bas worked as an artist in residence at the European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC) at the end of 2022. There, he expanded his knowledge of materials and created a series of works in ceramic. Working with ceramics is very different from the textiles that Bas is more accustomed to. This presented him with the challenge of instilling the same naive energy and softness found in his textile sculptures into the new material. That led to the creation of the series Brut Cute, composed of six soft-looking yet heavy sculptures, and four wall objects, the Resting Clouds.
