The painting (from the series "People say I'm different") shows the meeting between Anya Janssen and Ayo, a young artist from Uganda. Ayo is aware of her position as the 'other' in the eyes of many. She uses this game of perception as a means of power, her appearance is her own property.
Janssen is fascinated by Ayo's vision of the world and the contrast with her own position as a person, woman, artist and European. She looks for an equal contact and gradually realises: when you enter into a relationship with someone, he or she becomes part of your being. You are less autonomous than you think. A porous identity emerges where the static 'I' makes way for a fluid 'we'.
