In Journal Drawing 973 / Pol, Henri Jacobs uses the square and the circle to vary on the circular shape that is complete in the upper left and then is increasingly cut over so that it eventually turns into a star shape in the lower right. The remaining shapes between the white circles are filled in with smaller variations on the circle. These figures in the negative spaces are are drawn with ink pencil and watercolour, making them darker so the white circles stand out.
