Journal Drawing 999, 31 December 2020, Bright Light Inside with Small Black 34568 Entity' is the full title of this work on show in Henri Jacobs' solo GEOLOGIES. In this extraordinarily virtuoso drawing, Henri Jacobs creates a cube composed of strips that are horizontal on one side and vertical on the opposite. On the outside they are black and inside clear white, as if a bright light is shining within the cube. On the top right corner the 34568 entity of triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon and octagon appears like a little inkblot,
a motif that appears in several of Jacobs' drawings.
The bright circle on the right and rounded off rectangle on the left seem to make everything hover, as if the cube is in space with a moon or planet in the far distance. The intriguing construction of the cube in horizontals and verticals is remotely reminiscent of M.C. Escher's architectural fantasies. However, Henri Jacobs does not try to depict the impossible but merely uses the inversion vertical - horizontal and light - dark to enchant the cube.
