The Incense Sticks, 2023

'The Incense Sticks' stems from Dan Zhu's (1985) memory of a bronze incense holder shaped in the form of an ant. At the center of the image are two transparent giant leaves or chests. They are made up of curved lines that curl upwards like incense smoke. At the very bottom right, two ants can be seen carrying an incense stick from which the same shape emerges in miniature. The upward movement of the leaves or rib cages dominate the image, they therefore also look like kites suspended in the air. At the top they seem to be held by an organic shape that branches into four leaves. This mysterious growth is the seedling of the sal tree that is used in Asia to make incense.
