This painting of Elisabeth Trenkwalder shows an intriguing space that one intuitively interprets as a baqoque theatre with opulent red and guilded colours. The theatre boxes in the painting however do not open up towards the stage where the viewer is situated. Instead they are reversed in an inward movement reaching eachother in the vertical seam in the centre from which a mysterious light is glowing. On closer inspection the boxes are strangely organic with floral shapes or strains of hair whirling out of them, the red curtains separating them rather look like lips of a wide mouth. The constant movement of the swirling lines and voluptuous forms lead the viewer’s eye towards the mysterious light hidden in the center and back again towards the almost bodily architecture of this ‘théâtre sensuel’.
