Puck Verkade made this artwork as part of a series of collages based on the paper cut out animation technique that she used for several scenes that appear in her latest film 'Unborn' (2021). This is the oldest recorded technique in handmade frame-by-frame animation, going back to Lotte Reiniger's cut out stop motions from 1926.
As is usual with stop motion there is a Reversed and an Original side, making possible that a character can move both ways. The artwork is part of a series of five Original works that we offer individually. We offer the five Reversed versions as an entire series.
In Verkades film 'Unborn' a Monster Egg character comes to life, as it cracks open its shell to eerily reveal its hot pink legs and creepy claws. A bit silly but haunting and semi-alive, the Monster Egg explores the blurry lines of physical autonomy and biological determinism.
