Cedric ter Bals (1990) has been working over the past years on an ever expanding saga about his alter ego Oskar von Balz, a german soldier who fought at Verdun during World War One. Besides the story in the diary Tagebuch Oskar von Balz he also creates autonomous works dealing with the history of WW 1 which he connect with his own life. In Schlacht um Braquis (The Battle of Braquis) he depicts a battlefield around a church adorned with meticulously drawn side events and details, similar to a medieval miniature where several stories are told in the same picture. Franz Marc the artist known for his paintings of horses died in the Battle of Braquis. Ter Bals pays homage to the famous artist in this intriguing work which captivates the viewer in its beauty and horror.
