Ocean is a series of framed collages made from coloured paper shapes fixed together by tape. Formal terms gain potential emotional value in the works, where the cut, the internal relationship, the attachment, and the framing are in focus. The collages are made by dipping large sheets of cotton paper into vats of pigmented ink, hanging the paper up on washing lines, and when dry laying out the pieces of paper straight on the floor. Crawling amongst the colours and cut-out shapes, the paper is overlaid, taped together, and moved to the side. The process is focused and efficient, driven by a fleeting energy. The tape that initially held the pieces together during their time on the studio floor are left on the page, and now form part of the finished work. This tape reminds us of the practicalities that are involved with making physical work and they disturb the illusion of clean and pure abstraction.
