“Asteroid 149 Medusa in Caput Mortuum” is part of a series of 12 paintings in total. Each one of them depicts a different side of the asteroid “149 Medusa”. The asteroid was discovered by French astronomer Henri Joseph Perrotin, shortly after the tragedy of the infamous “Wreck of the Medusa”, mostly known from Gericault's painting "The Raft of The Medusa". If we look closer, the cosmic entities interact like the passengers of the doomed Raft, colliding and refining themselves in order to continue their course. Therefore, the asteroid is painted in “Caput Mortuum”, an intense, earthly color, reminiscent of humanity’s darkest side. Each one of the 12 paintings represents one snake from mythological Medusa’s head (as depicted in ancient Greek and Roman mosaics, with 12 snakes- 10 above her head and two under her chin).
