The Moth in the Eyes, 2021

The Moths in the Eyes shows an intricate pattern of wavy lines that originated with the contours of a vase drawn on two sheets of paper in 2019 when Dan Zhu studied at the Rijksacademie Amsterdam. She extended the work with six more sheets adding a second vase on the right of the work and connecting them with wavy leaflike shapes. In the middle she added a fishlike horizontal shape that ends with an oval shape on the left that contains an ear and a moth with an eye on its wings. Eyes also appear on a bigger scale in both vases and a small one at the far right. As always Dan Zhu creates a delicate mysterious and dreamilke image that slowly opens up and reveals its secrets.
